A heart in metal.
My hearing is recovering from a night of loud screaming and crazy moshy people.
Saw my first big metal show tonight! The Devil Wears Prada headlined w/ 3-4 other bands. They’re one of the few metal bands that I can actually stand, so far. Beyond the death growls, the actual music is pretty awesome. Great stuff, no doubt.
They also happen to be Christian.

Before anyone might assume it’s all just like “HALLELUJAH” screaming, know that their lyrics are all pretty friggen normal and just…real. They sing about life, struggles, and have a whole EP dedicated to zombies. ZOMBIES (I guess that’s not real).
Aside from the zombie stuff, they sing about what any other musicians would, sans sex and drugs, hah. The difference I’ve noticed: much of the struggles/problem topics in their lyrics also have some form of hope and resolution to it. Relieving, rather than depressing.
Apparently, at every show, DWP’s front man Mike Hranica makes a point to say that what they do and what their music is driven/inspired by is a “whole-hearted belief in Jesus Christ”. I heard and saw flinches and sighs all over when those words came through the mic.
He doesn’t get into it much or anything weird. He doesn’t start preaching or “shoving religion down anyone’s throat”. He brings up the heart behind the great music they make, in no more than 3 sentences.
Passion of some sort or another almost always drives music…love, ambition, sex, sadness…whatever. In these guys’ cases, it’s hope in a belief that there’s more to life than what a messed-up world with messed-up people has to offer.
It’s a positive, life-changing belief. What’s so bad about that? What is it about Jesus that makes people cringe?
